Thanks for the comparison pictures, BET! And some very interesting theories, Judy.

It does occur to me that females don't generally challenge males on the next (or vice versa) during the non-nesting season (it's up to the resident male to prove that he's the best provider/protector by chasing off all other males) - so perhaps now that the chicks are all big enough that a male isn't likely to endanger them, she is less concerned.

Definitely interesting - but I'd be happy with normal for a while.

Both chicks that are on the nest are doing a lot of flapping - does make me think something is in the area. The big fish is now lying abandoned at the 11:00 position, so I think they are defending their nest more than their food.

And I also need to say goodnight - it's getting quite late on the east coast, I'm afraid.

Standing watch? Will they stay on the nest all night guarding the uneaten fish?

I noticed the same thing, Jean. They want to keep their breakfast safe. Nothing like food to keep the teenagers at home.Titter

Good Morning Bev :hello:

WEATHER TODAY

High 20C
Sunny
Wind W15k/h
Low 6C

5:53 a.m.
One chick is perched at the 7:00 corner and the full fish is sitting at the 10:00 corner and a fish tail is sitting at 1:00.
I never thought I'd see the day when we have fish laying around on this nest. Mom had better slow down bringing in all these fish or these chicks will never leave home.

This chick is definitely interested in something below the nest. He's been peering over the side for over 5 minutes now.

No change. I thought by now another chick would arrive to begin breakfast but so far it's only our lone chick and he's not in the least interested in food.

6:31 am
The lone chick flew off.
I wonder how long it will be before someone comes along to eat all this fish ?

Out I must leave for work. I can hardly wait to catch up later today.
