In the back of my mind I wonder if the intruder that comes around would be the original female wanting to claim her old nest and "hubby" Puzzled

12:47 pm
This is likely the female laying in incubating position on the nest. Can't see enough of her breast feathers to tell for sure.

A male would not be on the nest in an incubating position. The osprey that's been on the nest is a female. I don't know this nest well enough to ID the female (resident or new this season), but when females have territory issues it becomes very clear. As of 11:30 pm EDT, no sign of eggs on the way. The female has been on the nest most the day, but standing. I did observe a mating, and a lot of 'bling moving'. I'll post pics in the morning.

How is the fish supply? Is there any osprey nesting competition? Are there American Bald Eagles in the area?

Female is on the nest.
There is a strong wind today and I'm hoping it will blow some of the debris off the nest.

Jazzel -- The Bow River is one of the best fishing rivers in Southern Alberta and has a great osprey and eagle population along it's banks. Food supply is not usually an issue but of course things can change on a yearly basis. This past winter was one of the longest and coldest so it's hard to tell at this point if there was winter kill.
And knowing this osprey family, when Dad doesn't feel like fishing the river he's great at stealing Koi from the neighbourhood and the zoo Titter

I think she has an egg. The nest was empty at 6:00 pm. I just checked again at 7:30 and think I saw an egg, she got down on it before I could get a pic. She's in an incubating position now....guess I'll just have to wait for her to get up.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 4, 2011

This is exciting to have our first egg and so glad you caught all the action Jazzel Clapping Now I hope the weather cooperates for the rest of the season. Today calls for a high of 15C (59F) and sunshine.

By the way this first egg was laid 6 days earlier than the first egg of 2010

6:47 am
Mom is incubating the egg.

6:50 am
Dad has arrived and it looks as if he has a small fish in his talons . Mom glances at him but doesn't get up from the egg.

6:54 am
Mom got up off the egg and headed over to Dad to claim the fish.

Instead of eating on the nest Mom grabbed the fish and flew off with it.
Dad fluffs up the bowl of the nest and takes a turn at incubating the egg.

6:56 am
Dad is up again to adjust things. He's having a hard time finding a comfortable spot. Hope he doesn't leave the egg exposed for too long.

6:57 am
FINALLY he's laying on the egg and looking straight up at the camera.

7:39 am
Dad has an early morning visitor.

He got up and flapped his wings to chase the intruder off and stepped on the egg while he was at it. The egg looks okay.
He resumed incubating when the "threat" was gone.

I was away from the camera for awhile but came back at 10:05 a.m. to see both adults on the nest.

10:12 am
Dad flew off and Mom remained to incubate the egg.

10:29 am
Mom is up to move a piece of debris that has been bothering her. She had been pulling on it for the longest time but it seemed to have been caught on something directly below her.
