2025 MDT

The snow melted fairly soon after noon. Mom and Dad on and off the nest - a couple of psuedo matings. A routine afternoon.

It seems that Mom has now settled in for night. She has piled grasses a,most up to her neck looking like she plans to stay put



Just lost the transmission -

Bet, thanks for all the nest updates.... Northern Canadian and USA ospreys have had a very cold, wet, windy and snowy Spring. I hope the weather changes soon...if not, it will take a toll on them. Although Ospreys have an oil gland, their feathers don't repel water like gulls, ducks and many other waterfowl, more like Cormorants ( example ) for the same reason, they need to submerge. Also, they don't have a heavy down, for warmth. It's amazing how birds...not just ospreys...can migrate from a very warm climate to a cold climate...

Speaking of the weather, my internet has been up and down, more down, most of today...very strong winds, followed by T storms.

A stormy windy day in Calgary. The O's have an unwanted visitor in the neighborhood. Both have hunkered down on the nest, heads swiveling, watching the area and Dad taking off every so often. One time I did spot the visitor with Dad giving chase, but the image too small to be worth positing, just tiny flying ants in the sky behind the nest.

Here Dad had just landed on the nest and was backing up watching the visitor - he wasn't paying attention to Mom, whom he backed into and lost his balance

3:35pm MDT

The unwanted visitor must still be in the neighborhood. Dad just flew in and put on a threatening display - (In his mind it's threatening - I think it's lovely - I love seeing those wings spread and repositioned )

I finally got a chance to check this nest and Mom was in brooding position. Of course I was thinking maybe she had an egg already but the minute she got up and left I see that she has been incubating "trash".

JKR, from what I observed yesterday, she's trying to keep the "trash" out of her face....trash

Yesterday 4/30, nothing remarkable...all times are EDT.

Doen't appear there will be an egg today...but we never know Bet posted on 4/29, "intruder" (I believe osprey). Intruders are always an issue to be considered when observing a nest. All times are EDT.

In the back of my mind I wonder if the intruder that comes around would be the original female wanting to claim her old nest and "hubby"

This is likely the female laying in incubating position on the nest. Can't see enough of her breast feathers to tell for sure.
