Thanks for refreshing my memory of how to post pictures. I forget year over year.

Here is one of Obey bringing in a big fat squirrel this morning. First ever brought to the nest thus far.

Dad is gone and DH3 didn't get up to eat Cry having said that ... DH3 had a set back when the weather got bad and food was scarce .... and he didn't seem to recover from that... while this is hard to watch I have to keep reminding myself that we are only observers and this is nature .... so we can expect anything... ... I was so hoping the DH3 would thrive and grow ... but that doesn't seem to be happening... Cry

Hi everyone, and thanks for your reports and photos, Bev and MsO.

And hug

Several people have been asking if there isn't something we can do for little DH3 - and the short answer is no.

The only ones who can help him are the parents, and DH3 him/herself.

There have been instances where cam operators and local wildlife organizations have been able to get the necessary state and federal permissions to approach a nest, but those are almost always cases where a chick was put at risk by something humans did - most often, in my observations through the cams, involving fishing line.

Adult has found some food, and is trying to feed #3; DH3 is interested, but it looks as if the pieces being offered may be too big.

Continuing my previous post:

Several people have been asking if there isn't something we can do for little DH3 - and the short answer is no.

The only ones who can help him are the parents, and DH3 him/herself.

There have been instances where cam operators and local wildlife organizations have been able to get the necessary state and federal permissions to approach a nest, but those are almost always cases where a chick was put at risk by something humans did - most often, in my observations through the cams, involving fishing line.

What's happening here is sad and hard to watch - and 100% natural.

And if we look back a couple of days, it looked as if we might lose both younger chicks, and DH2 appears to be doing well and growing by leaps and bounds - which is the good-news story that's getting lost in the shuffle as we watch DH3 try so hard against such great odds.

At this point, as others have pointed out, DH1 is the size of a large 3-week-old eaglet, which is what s/he is. And DH2 is almost as big as an average almost 3-week-old eaglet - and gaining. And the adults have been feeding eaglets for 3 weeks, so they are feeding bites that match 3-week-old beaks. I don't know where DH3 is in terms of development, but s/he is much smaller than a 2-1/2 week old eaglet should be - and as we saw, can't handle some of the food being offered with his/her smaller beak.

If it were possible to get all the permits and rescue DH3 - there would be no guarantee of recovery. Major systems may already be shutting down, and sad though it is to watch, if he doesn't make it, this may be a more peaceful way to go.

And there's always a chance - keeping fingers crossed.
