The tongue of a bird is extremely sensitive, filled with tactile sensory corpuscles. Two features we could see were the hole in the tongue and the backward facing barbs. The hole in the tongue is the “glottis” which is the entrance to the larynx and trachea which is known as the windpipe. The glottis closes during swallowing. The barbs are called “rear-directed papillae” and aid in the swallowing of food.

A. They moult gradually from spring through autumn. They do not moult all their feathers each year; some of the feathers moult over two (or possibly more) years/i]

So nice to see you here Bev, and great s'caps.

I agree Mr P is truly handsome. He often wears feather bling on the beak.

Just checked the nest log, looks like TFL had duty most of the afternoon and switched off with Mr P somewhere between 4 and 5pm.

For those interested this is the link for the events log - from chat (The events log can keep you up to date http://tinyurl.com/zxxod7p ) The log is kept by the cam operators, we can't modify it, but we can view it.
