Harriet & M15 Get A+ In Aerodynamics 10-19-16

Man studied birds when airplanes first came into existence, and still do today. We see the ease of flight, familiarity of maneuvers and the different ways they carry sticks watching M15 and Harriet today. Harriet flies out, grabs a branch and flies right back to the nest... "non-stop". M15 has learned to gain altitude and approach slowly in order to clear the nest with a large cumbersome branch. They are beautiful to watch in flight.

M15's large branch... lots of pine boughs for Harriet

NEST ACTIVITY

12:15am There were alert vocals at 11:52pm, Wednesday. I did not see either adult move at that time. But I do see M15 in the outer branch and Harriet on the outer attic branch still.

wskrsnwngs: 6:15 I am at the nest. H and M are perched in outer attic and outer branch. Short soft vocals heard.

6:33 Harriet vocal. I only see H on the attic branch. M in nest maybe, too dark to see.

6:38 M soft long vocal. M to attic.

6:42 M flies from nest tree. Too dark to see where. H is on veranda branch now.

7:02 H to attic. Vocal.

7:37 H fly off toward the church.

7:38 Harriet flies off to the NE, out of sight... same direction I believe M15 flew early this am.

9:50 H in with a stick

9:54 M joins H in the nest

9:56 H to the spike

wskrsnwngs: 10:00 I forgot to post that I left at 9:30am. So I cannot tell you where M and H flew in from.

The flew in from behind the office way

10:06-08 one to porch and one to attic I believe

Mating/Bonding at 10:12am. Harriet and then M15 left the nest tree at 10:20am. Flew over Yonder Pond and soared for a bit before perching in trees in the distance. Noticed today there are a number of down feathers in the nest tree. Most likely the brood patch is beginning to form.

1:45 an Eagle has landed.

More grass 1:47 Harriet came in with grass

1:53 Harriet to spike and flies away towards i think the west pasture

2.46 M to nest with a fish head - Harriet follows

Harriet claims the prized fishhead

M drops back down to the nest to check H's progress and moves dome nest materials.

2.55 M to the spike

M went to the attic

3.01 H feaking on the trunk

3.04 H to the porch

Missed H leaving but was between 3.07 and 3.10

Handsome M15

i like the highlights of the sun on his head

Like a glowing halo

3:22 and off he goes

3:39 someone just flew into the nest with a stick

341 the other one flew into nest with a stick

H on the nest and M on the spike Smile

Her tail tips are really raggedy today

3.46 M leaves the tree toward the road

maybe he will bring back the other part of the fish

3.55 H to the step up veranda branch

now to the attic and gone

she went out to the outer end of the lower branch

Harriets tail feathers

Giggling, that beak hasn't decreased in size over the years

Harriet to the nest at around 7:05pm. M15 joins her in the nest at 7:06pm. Moving nest material around.

nice spot for them to end up in for the evening

718pm i think M flew back to the nest tree from OCT

Eagles Do Fly In The Dark~Just What Is Harriet Pondering? 10-20-16

M15 flew from the nest tree in the darkness. Yes, eagles can and will fly at night/in the dark. Their sight is similar to humans; they are diurnal - active during the day. Harriet remained at the nest tree, watchful, thoughtful, and preening attentively in her breast area. This is the time we start looking for signs of a brood patch. The brood patch does not happen overnight. It develops gradually beginning sometime before the eggs are laid. Harriet seemed to be in deep thought before she left. If only we knew what she was thinking about. So we continue to observe Harriet & M15 while they finish crib rails and bring more soft material for the nest bowl and prepare for egg laying.

Harriet seemed to be pondering something... or many things
