Not sure what Dad saw, but he was tracking intently, then stood up and appeared to flap at something approaching the nest. A moment later, he settled back on the egg. I wasn't fast enough to get a picture of him turned halfway around following whatever it was, or the big flap to chase it off - so here he is settling back down again so we have a timestamp.

Mom was watching from her perch while this happened, so I think it was more annoying that a threat. I've seen other adults flap like that at mice on a nest.

It was all very fast, Bev!
11:31 am
I think Dad is sitting up beside the egg rather than incubating it - though hard to be sure. (And I think that's fine - he's spent plenty of time to make it nice and warm, so a bit of cooling may be in order - though it's not something we've seen them do before. [Maybe you were right, Bev - they might have been chatting with the Delta 2 eagles during the salmon run, as this is normal behavior for them!])

Mom is still on her perch by the river - so happy to see that she's getting a proper break today.

Just noticed that my picture of Dad is 15 minutes later than yours, Bev - and looks identical! I will add for the record that he is looking around casually as he hangs out on the nest - we just happened to get him looking the same direction both times!
11:39 am
Dad just flew off. Mom called and did some flapping, but he didn't join her on the perch. She's still there, looking around. Egg is alone.
