Welcome to the Ardmore Bald Eagle Nest

This thread is dedicated to observations, photos and videos of the eagles who inhabit a nest located in the Ardmore area of North Saanich on Vancouver Island BC.
The nest is located on private property.
By all accounts and observations this pair did not nest successfully in 2015.
We wish them better success in the coming season.

Here is the link to the 2014-2015 thread.

I did a tour of all the nests I monitor on the Saanich Peninsula today. I did not see any eagles around the nest area or at the beach but I'm sure I heard one calling somewhere in the distance. I checked all the trees along Ardmore Dr. but still did not see one. The nest is still intact Left thumb up

I saw an adult eagle this afternoon perched in a tree beside the Ardmore Golf Course clubhouse. I don't know for sure that it was one from the Ardmore nest but I have seen eagles perched there in the past. Couldn't get a good pic as the sun was low on the other side of the tree.

Had a lovely paddle on a beautiful day at Coles Bay adjacent to the Ardmore nest. Two bald eagles were sighted on the opposite side of the bay from the nest on separate occasions. There used to be a nest there, on Native reserve land, but we could not locate it yesterday. We did however find another nest in the Ardmore area.

I visited the nest area & the beach this afternoon. Both eagles were perched in different trees on the property at the end of the road. There is another nest on Ardmore close to the mailboxes by the golf course but I didn't stop to take a pic. The nest that I was told about quite a few years ago, which is on private property on the water side of Ardmore, is still there but hasn't been used for many years.

I visited the nest area yesterday and did not see or hear the eagles. The nest does not look like any new sticks have been added.

There is another nest a short way down the road and a fellow walking his dog said the eagles are using it. There were quite a few new sticks added to this nest although I did not see a white head in the nest.

I visited the nest area yesterday and did not see or hear any eagles around the old nest on Ardmore Dr. or the nest they have used for the past few years. One of the eagles was sitting on the rocks off shore near the end of Ardmore Dr.

I visited the Ardmore eagles' nest areas yesterday. I did not see or hear any eagles in the vicinity of either nest.

I walked down to the beach and was surprised to see one of the eagles sitting on the dock offshore. It looked like it had a good full crop.

As I got into my car ready to leave, I saw a big black bird fly from the beach area to the nest area. When I got back to the nest area it was perched in a tree very near the nest preening.

A short while later the other eagle flew to a nearby tree closer to the water.

One last pic of the nest tree before I left. Neighbour Nancy came home while I was there and we chatted for awhile. She said she doesn't think the eagles have any eaglets in the nest as she has seen them together off the nest quite a few times.

I visited the nest area yesterday. There was no sign of any activity at the 2nd nest up the road by the mail boxes, even though I saw a lot of new sticks in the nest earlier in the season. When I arrived at the nest they have been using, one adult was perched in the tree on the neighbour's property. This looked like the male.

Today we saw a fledgling eaglet flying over the beach at Ardmore and an adult was watching from a tree close by quite low down on a branch.
Back with pix tomorrow.

Fledgling

The beautiful adult female watching from shore. Not sure what this means because both Ardmore nests looked empty this season.

I visited the nests and the beach yesterday. There was no evidence that either nest has been used. elle I have no idea where the fledgling is from Puzzled While I was down on the beach an adult flew down and landed on the far side of the rocky area on the dock side. I couldn't see it but when I got close enough to catch a glimpse of its white head it flew off towards the trees behind the nest tree. When I spotted it, it was preening. The branch it was perched on looks like it had recently broken.

_____________

Several years ago, before I started this thread, there was an active Bald Eagle nest across Coles Bay on reserve land. Sadly we have not kayaked in that bay this year as we normally would have done by now but maybe these Ardmore eagles nested there this year? It is possibly ( likely?) within their territory. We hope to get out there for a paddle next week although it may be too late in the season already to see if the nest was used this year. It is an enigma because that was definitely a newly fledged eaglet we saw and it certainly looked like that adult was watching.
