Ma & Pa Sidney- Epicure Bald Eagle Nest - 2015-2016 Season

Welcome to Ma and Pa Sidney 2015-2016 thread.

Ma and Pa Sidney have returned to their nest on Epicure property where they had previously nested from 2009-2011.

In 2015 they successfully fledged one eaglet at the Epicure nest.

Efforts to have a cam re-installed for the upcoming 2015-2016 season were unfortunately unsuccessful. If Ma and Pa have a successful nesting season again in 2016 there is hope for a cam for the following year 2016-2017.

Epicure is a working business property in the municipality of North Saanich near Sidney BC. It is not open to the general public. Visitors and photographers are asked not to trespass and to respect the privacy and security regulations.

Visitors to the public Pat Bay area are welcome to share their observations, photos and videos of Ma & Pa Sidney taken at the beach and environs.

We all wish this beloved pair another successful year.

The 2014-2015 thread can be viewed here

Spent the afternoon yesterday at Pat Bay and Sidney and other known Bald Eagle nest spots on the Saanich Peninsula and there were no eagle sightings at all. Last week we kayaked in the area as well and also no sightings. Still a bit early for a return and reports of recent salmon runs are good so hopefully they are all having a good feast and will be home soon .fingers crossed I can't wait to see Ma and Pa Sidney safely back at their nest territory.

Pat : It is always a relief to see Ma and Pa back safely. Ma was perched by herself in one of the few trees left where the ( horrible) 8 lot subdivision took place at the south end of the reserve. That area is now virtually clear cut and one house is almost finished construction. More to come according to the signs. I got out to have a look with binoculars to see if it was indeed her and not Pa and then Pa flew in ! I was more than thrilled. There was no vocalisation so I don't think we were witnessing his initial arrival in the territory.
On the way to Pat Bay I was wondering in the car if the full moon has anything to do with the timing of their return. Some hypothesise they navigate by the stars so why not? It would be interesting to look back on the dates they come back and see how close that is to the full moon.
I hope they enjoyed the eclipse last night Smile

Larry: As you know there is still a possibility of a cam for next year. We will see how things go this season. We are too late for lunch at Muse as the bistro is closed for the season but here are lots of other places we could go in Sidney. Ian and I can fill you in about the cam negotiations when we see you.

Now I must upload some pix .Out

Wonderful to know our Sidneys have both returned looking hale and hearty. I especially like your last picture Lynda, Pa looking down at people below. I wonder if they knew he was eyeing them.

I did a tour today of all the nests I monitor on the Saanich Peninsula. I did not see or hear Ma or Pa anywhere Sad For the benefit of those who are not familiar with Ma & Pa's perch/lookout area, I took a pic of the subdivision. The original property was subdivided into 8 lots; 4 on W. Saanich Rd. facing the beach, and 4 behind, accessible from Tsaykum Rd. It really is sad to see so many trees chopped down Sad Click bigger.

Thx Sandra, I like that one too. In my experience people are more often than not oblivious and in some cases I think this could be a good thing . They are often walking dogs for one thing. I do not draw attention to them any more like I used to because it never occurred to me initially that some people would not be as happy to see them as I am.

Marg: You didn't direct your question at me so I will allow sassyk to respond but don't worry. The Sidney nest at Epicure is not at risk.
I have refrained from posting pictures of the subdivision because it is upsetting and just another affront of Ma and Pa's territory. First the development, also horrible in my opinion, at Mills Rd and West Saanich ,where they used to perch by the church , then the destruction of their perch trees along the beach and now this new development where we were reassured their perch trees would remain intact but they are gone.
They can adapt thankfully. But it is sad to actually see unsympathetic and totally avoidable wildlife habitat loss right in front of your eyes. Sad

Marg yes this new subdivision is in Ma & Pa Sidney's territory, down the road from the Epicure property by the Pat Bay Trading Post. They have been perching in the trees on that property for many years. Some of their favourite perch trees on that property and along the beach at Pat Bay have broken off in the wind over the years and some of the trees on the Epicure property where they have their nest have also fallen or blown down in past years. It is sad to see but it is happening more and more all over the west coast Mad We can get some pretty fierce wind storms during the fall months and Mother Nature definitely has a mind of her own Sad With the recent drought we have been experiencing I would not be surprised if more trees fall this year Sad

Quick trip through Pat Bay today and no eagles around. It was a week ago today I saw Ma and Pa and now they seem to be gone again. I often wonder if they reunite, confirm their bond and then leave again. It is early for Goldstream so where can they be?
The 2 Oak Bay eagles I saw about 10 days ago are nowhere in sight since then too.
Perhaps climate change is altering their habits?

Ma and Pa were back in their Pat Bay territory today on a beautiful warm and sunny mid October afternoon. Back with pictures and videos tomorrow. Ma was particularly visible unlike during nesting season when we hardly ever see her out of the nest and she is a stunning beautiful girl! No wonder Pa loves her Smile
