Good Morning to all who watch this nest

Another cool start to the day in the MId-Atlantic, rain in the forecast for later today and tonight
9:30 am nap time, noticing the natal down on the top of the head is starting to be replaced with the feathers of a juvenile eagle.

some close ups, eaglets are 32 and 33 days old today..
Interesting facts... at 30-35 days...
The male eaglet may weigh 5.5 lb. and the female may weigh 7 lb.
Bill depth on males is about 1.05", on females about 1.14".
Foot pad on males is about 5", on females about 5.3".
The eaglet is at its peak energy demand for metabolism, maintenance, and growth.

taken from CCB Eagle Nest Blog
"The tongue of a bird is extremely sensitive, filled with tactile sensory corpuscles. Two features we could see were the hole in the tongue and the backward facing barbs.

The hole in the tongue is the “glottis” which is the entrance to the larynx and trachea which is known as the windpipe. The glottis closes during swallowing. The barbs are called “rear-directed papillae” and aid in the swallowing of food."
