Welcome to the second season of the Berry College Eagle Cam here on HWF!!
All of us here at HWF would like to thank Berry College for letting us see a this wonderful view into the life of Henry and Martha, their resident bald eagles. The eagles were named Henry and Martha after Berry's founder Martha Berry and Berry College contributor Henry Ford. The eagles have set up a massive nest just behind the school's athletic center. This is the first documented nest in the modern history of Floyd County, Georgia.

This was the first live, streaming video camera of a bald eagle nest in Georgia. Both of the cams are accessible from this link which contains two buttons--one for each cam.
A second nest camera, a Pelco, donated by Schneider Electric, has been installed by a crew from Georgia Power Company. The new camera was placed on a limb opposite the current nest camera and will feature sound -
Many thanks to Pelco and Georgia Power for their assistance with the Berry College Eagles! The crew brought in a special lift truck that was able to get to the nest, about 115 feet up in the top of a large pine tree. The crew not only installed the new camera but they were able to tilt the current nest camera for a better view. - See more at: http://www.berry.edu/eaglecam/#sthash.DwUCo0RB.dpuf

The nest cam has been installed in an area very close to the nest and which is "off limits" during nesting season. If something happens to the camera (picture shift, damage, blackout, eagle attack,) then repairs will not be made until after the eagles have left the nest. - See more at: http://www.berry.edu/eaglecam/nestcam/# ... A little nest history ---
Eagles had been reported in the vicinity of the campus for several years. The eagles had attracted the attention of photographers and others statewide. Students and faculty flocked to the site to catch a glimpse of the majestic couple. The eagles were seen carrying sticks to build their nest, but to the disappointment of many, they had nested too late to produce offspring. By April 2012 they were gone – but not for long.
In October 2012, the eagles returned to the nest, and in November they were seen mating. Two eggs hatched by January 2013. The eaglets and their parents continued to impress scores of watchers, all fascinated with the sight of eagle parents bringing food to the nest and, later, the wing-flapping of the eaglets in preparation for flight.
Both of Berry's 2012/2013 eaglets fledged during the last week of April. Eaglet 1 flew on April 22 and Eaglet 2 flew on April 28.
The main sources of food for the Berry eagles are the nearby Berry quarry, Oostanaula River and Garden Lakes where they can be seen catching coots and fish.
---------------------------------
For the first year on the cam in 2013/14 this pair laid 2 eggs in January but only one hatched in February. The eaglet, B3, fledged on May 22nd at the age of 89 days

We received the news at the end of the 2013/14 season that there is a second, well hidden eagle nest located on the Berry College Campus.
From Berry College ~~~
"We have waited to share this with our Eagle Friends in order to maintain privacy but we are finally happy to report that the second nest on the Berry campus, in an inaccessible area not open to the public, had THREE eaglets in spring of 2014. We believe they all fledged successfully. These eaglets are called BMC1, BMC2 and BMC3 (for Berry Mountain Campus). We hope the parents will return again this year. We will be checking on them very infrequently as they do not like humans in the area and it is a very difficult area to reach."

Some information about Berry College, the location of the nest and the cam's host ~~

Berry College is a private, independent, coeducational, four-year liberal arts college of approximately 2,100 students. It is located near Rome, Georgia in northwest Georgia about 72 miles from Atlanta and 75 miles south of Chattanooga, TN. There are 47 primary buildings on campus, including 15 classroom facilities and 10 residence halls.
Berry offers an unusually beautiful environment for learning on its 27,000-acre campus. It is the world's largest contiguous college campus. Fields, forests, lakes and mountains (Lavender Mountain) provide scenic beauty in a protected natural setting. Designated portions of the campus are open to the public for hiking, cycling, horseback riding, and other outdoor activities. The campus is also home to a large population of deer (estimates range between 1,500 and 2,500). The Georgia Department of Natural Resources oversees about 16,000 acres of the campus, conducts managed hunts and provides recreational opportunities within the department of regulations. However, land encompassing the academic buildings and other public spaces is a wildlife refuge in which no hunting is allowed. This beautiful campus is a perfect place for a pair of eagles to call home!
Berry College was founded in 1902 by Martha Berry (1865-1942) as a school for enterprising rural boys when few public schools existed in Georgia. A girls' school was added in 1909. Berry became one of the nation's most successful educational experiments, combining academic study, student work and interdenominational Christian religious emphasis. Berry has an excellent record of sound growth. A junior college was established in 1926 and a four-year college in 1930; graduate programs were added in 1972.
