Here are a few s'caps I snipped from a video Feb. 24th while someone was cutting the grass. Kaloakulua was in the nest preening. The person was pulling out the bits of grass & plants in front of the nest.

Some s'caps of Kaloakulua today. An unbanded adult wandered up to the nest just before 2pm and poked at Kaloakulua then wandered away.

Those are wonderful, Kay - thank you so much! It's hard to believe that prickly little thing is going to grow up to be a sleek adult like Dad! And I loved his or her reaction to the person working in the area - so cute! (Is it known yet if the chick is male or female? Maybe I should read the first posts....)

JudyB you are very welcome. I enjoy watching this cam and Kaloakulua is such a cute little fluffball. I copied this info from the FAQ list on the cam site:

Is the chick a boy or a girl? We canít tell the chickís gender just by looking. The only way to know an albatross's gender for sure is by DNA testing or, with adults, by observing behavior (for example, witnessing the female lay an egg, or seeing the male perching on the back of the female during mating).

Thanks, Kay! The adults looked similar enough that I was guessing it would be difficult to tell without a blood test - thought there must be some sort of bird where the fluffy chicks come in pink and blue so it's easy! Smile

Kaloakulua goes for a walk around the nest area. S/he wandered off to the right and out of view of the cam but returned several minutes later.
