Thanks, Kay and Bev - wonderful news! Were all the eggs laid at about the same time?

Hi Bev & Judy Isn't it eggciting to be watching Malu's newly hatched chick Niaulani (Niau) Wub Judy I can't find any info on the site to say when all the eggs were laid but found a post on Bird Cams Facebook page that said they thought Kaluahine, who is Kaloakalua's Mom, laid her egg Nov. 26th or 27th Chin Her nest is out of view of the cam. Link here

The s'cap posted on the chat said the chick hatched at 4:31am. I was watching, recording and taking s'caps a couple of hours later and it was quite obvious to me that the chick wasn't fully free of the egg. It's back end seemed to be still attached and it was struggling. It finally came free at approx. 8:47am nest time. Nest time is 2 hrs. later than my time; I always capture the time at the bottom of the s'caps but it isn't easy to read Roll eyes While I was watching earlier the cam switched back to night vision to a couple of hours earlier Chin I have lots of s'caps to post Don't Panic

7:28am nest time and the chick's back end is still attached to the egg.

I love that middle picture, Kay - you have a great eye!

I was reading back on some nest recently, and it sounded as if they were using the time when the shell split as the time of hatch, rather than the time when the chick is completely free of the shell. No clue if there's some standard that scientists use - or why I've generally assumed it was when the chick was completely out of the shell. Puzzled

Thanks Judy. Yes, I have read similar comments on different sites re 'hatch time'. I have no idea what the biologists consider 'hatch time'. We have always thought it was when the eagle chick was free of the egg Chin

I saw on the chat that Kaloakulua's parents have a new chick, also hatched today WooHoo

These pics are posted on the chat and I think someone has the time wrong; they seem to be out by 1 hr. The time on this 1st one should be 8:43am not 9:43am.

The same person posted this next one of the chick's 1st feeding and the time should be 8:48am not 9:48am.

This is my s'cap of the chick's 1st feeding at 8:49am. Completely free of the shell
