Welcome to Berry College's Bald Eagle Cam and it's first season here at HWF!!
We here at HWF would like to thank Berry College for letting us see a bird's eye view into the life of Henry and Martha, their resident bald eagles. The eagles were named Henry and Martha after Berry's founder Martha Berry and Berry College contributor Henry Ford. The eagles have set up a massive nest just behind the school's athletic center. This is the first documented nest in the modern history of Floyd County, Georgia.
During the summer of 2013, college staff relocated the “approach” video camera to a pole closer to the nest and, with the help of a Georgia Power crew, mounted a “nest cam” in a branch near the eagles’ nest.
More information on the cams ~~ http://www.berry.edu/page_s.aspx?id=100944
This is the only live, streaming video camera of a bald eagle nest in Georgia. Both of the cams are accessible from this link which contains two buttons--one for each cam.

Eagles have been reported in the vicinity of the campus for the past two to three years. The birds attracted the attention of photographers and others statewide. Students and faculty flocked to the site to catch a glimpse of the majestic couple. The eagles were seen carrying sticks to build their nest, but to the disappointment of many, they had nested too late to produce offspring. By April they were gone – but not for long.
In October 2012, the eagles returned to the nest, and in November they were seen mating. Two eggs hatched by January 2013. The eaglets and their parents continued to impress scores of watchers, all fascinated with the sight of eagle parents bringing food to the nest and, later, the wing-flapping of the eaglets in preparation for flight.
The main sources of food for the Berry eagles are the nearby Berry quarry, Oostanaula River and Garden Lakes where they can be seen catching coots and fish.
Both of Berry's 2012/2013 eaglets fledged during the last week of April. Eaglet 1 flew on April 22 and Eaglet 2 flew on April 28.

A little about our host, Berry College ~~

Berry College is a private, independent, coeducational, four-year liberal arts college of approximately 2,100 students. It is located near Rome, Georgia in northwest Georgia about 72 miles from Atlanta and 75 miles south of Chattanooga, TN. There are 47 primary buildings on campus, including 15 classroom facilities and 10 residence halls.
Berry offers an unusually beautiful environment for learning on its 27,000-acre campus. It is the world's largest contiguous college campus. Fields, forests, lakes and mountains (Lavender Mountain) provide scenic beauty in a protected natural setting. Designated portions of the campus are open to the public for hiking, cycling, horseback riding, and other outdoor activities. The campus is also home to a large population of deer (estimates range between 1,500 and 2,500). The Georgia Department of Natural Resources oversees about 16,000 acres of the campus, conducts managed hunts and provides recreational opportunities within the department of regulations. However, land encompassing the academic buildings and other public spaces is a wildlife refuge in which no hunting is allowed. This beautiful campus is a perfect place for a pair of eagles to call home!
Berry College was founded in 1902 by Martha Berry (1865-1942) as a school for enterprising rural boys when few public schools existed in Georgia. A girls' school was added in 1909. Berry became one of the nation's most successful educational experiments, combining academic study, student work and interdenominational Christian religious emphasis. Berry has an excellent record of sound growth. A junior college was established in 1926 and a four-year college in 1930; graduate programs were added in 1972.

I checked out the new cam and there was one incredibly beautiful eagle on it, even in the night cam. She I think must have been bothered by bugs, kept shaking her head but one beautiful eagle!

She is definitely favoring her left foot. No visible sign of injury so hopefully she just has a pulled muscle or something.
definitely limping

I had missed her too. She is still limping. ty for the video that shows how she is moving from nest to limb. I sure don't see any foot damage so it must be up higher on her leg. Will be watching for her.

Hi Judy Lynn! Nice to see you here. When I got up in the night last night she was still on nest so I ran video. Here is a few glimpses of the limp and also she seems to have a spot on her head that she is scratching at a lot. I hope these issues are just minor. I did capture a healthy ps so that is encouraging!
Beautiful eagle spent the night
No visits tonight other than a young squirrel.

Our beautiful lady is on the nest tonight. She didn't seem to be limping quite as much tonight. She also hasn't scratched at that spot on her head that she has been worrying at the last few times I saw her. Looks like she is slowly healing from whatever injuries she had.

Hi all----
Berry College must be receiving a lot of questions concerning the female with her limp. They just now posted this on their facebook page ~~~
Berry College Eagles
Friends, we very much appreciate your interest in our eagles and your concern about their health. Please understand that the nest cam allows us to see nature "up close and personal" in a way that can sometimes be uncomfortable for us to see. But that is nature.
The nest is 100 feet up in a tree and we have no way to get to it if we were allowed, which we are not. Watchers across the nation at other web cams have seen eaglets killed and parents injured or killed. These eagles are not our pets but we are given the opportunity to get a peek into their fascinating world. We have followed the direction of government agencies to protect the nest area.
Our eagles chose to build their nest in an unusual place near a busy parking lot, college entrance and extremely busy 4-lane highway. It would not be unexpected for one or both of the eagles to suffer some kind of injury while hunting or procuring food.
Dr. Carleton, an expert on faculty, is observing the eagles as is Eddie Elsberry, director of sustainability. We all hope that these glorious birds will flourish this season. But there are no guarantees and while it is difficult to watch, nature will take its course. I will post again when there is information to share.
