Male With Fish (Dropped) Flying With K97~2-11-17
This is a short recap of today. There is an intruder female eagle (possibly 4 years old) that is causing some havoc for the Lake Casitas Eagle pair today. I do not have footage of the intruder, although I did see her earlier (didn't have binocs or equipment) and a few other of our photographers (Linda, Dave and Patricia) captured some close ups of her...see previous posts. My husband and I returned to the nest with equipment. The male returned next to nest with a fish and began devouring it. As he took a short break to look around, the fish dropped. Within moments, he took off and we discovered that he took flight with K97, the resident female, flying eastbound past Santa Ana Road. Thanks to Dave for getting shots of her. He returned to the nest area about a half hour later for a few minutes and eventually departed making way to their 'island' tree.

The male and female were observed by Mark later in the day perched near the nest and then taking in flight together. Intruder was not observed.

We are expecting the female to lay sometime mid to late February.

Finally getting this posted here for documentation...This was in 2015.

The original female at Lake Casitas was displaced by Female K/97 (hatched in 2009 from the West End Nest/ Channel Islands) in late March, 2015 after a horrible battle.
Both eggs/newly hatched chicks were lost/killed by the the intruding female. The first hatched chick was found deceased below the nest and taken to the Ojai Raptor Center. It is believed that the second newly hatched chick was consumed by the intruding/now resident female based on video footage that was posted in a previous post. Here is the link to that video. Not easy to watch... http://youtu.be/pWcm4W7P4wM

Here is the Ojai Valley News article with a photo by John Hannah....

New Hatchling? Behavior Change & Food Delivery~4-1-17

It looks like hatch is happening or has already happened. Female was in the nest and called out for the male, who arrived about 10 minutes later with food. They both stood together for about 5 minutes in the nest looking down quite a bit, almost as if the male might be seeing a hatchling or an almost hatchling for the first time. The female flew to the dead tree next to hill and preened for about 20 minutes, took off to perch on the old nest tree, closer to the nest and it didn't look like she was planning to go anywhere.

Feeding & Fish Delivery With Slow Mo ~4-6-17

I was trying out an extender on my still camera which allows for 2x's magnification for a closer view of the nest. Since I have to manually focus the camera, it doesn't always work well. Maybe I need glasses. LOL

Photo and comment by Sally Carless.

"I thought I saw a matching pair of juvies this afternoon at the far side of the lake. I wasn’t sure, though. Then, when I was near the boat docks I could see an adult doing some maneuvers with some other birds over by the storage area. One of the birds flew closer and I got a shot; it looks just like the ones I saw earlier… After that I drove outside and looked across to the nest from the road. Both parents were standing up in the nest, very focused on something (too far to tell): food? kids?"
