Eha began feeding baby probably before 4:11 am. It went until 4:19 am. Baby got a good early breakfast of left over mole.

4:55 am Eha is alert on the nest.

Given the amount of time baby 1 has had to eat and grow, I am secretly hoping that the second egg does not hatch.

6:00 am Came in on a feed in progress. More like an 'attempted' feed in progress. Eha kept offering small bites of food and while baby's head was up and he was making peeping sounds, he wasn't eating anything. Think he was saying - I'm full from before Ma, honestly.

Been a quiet morning. Eha had stood up for a bit, aerated the nest, rolled the egg and sat back down. Very breezy. The tree was swaying. Saw Eha eat one of her smaller feathers that had fallen out.

Around 9:29 am, Eha got up to finish the rest of the mole. She offered some to baby but baby was not interested. Hope Koit makes a delivery soon. Eha needs her nourishment too. Smile

Eha is very careful going back on baby. She curls her toes in and makes certain that nothing is tangled in her claws. Then she rocks to get a better fit over baby. Did not see egg this time.

elfjune :hello: Because Lesser Spotted Eagles practice "cainism" it would certainly be better if the 2nd egg would´t hatch at all. Nodding yes The 2nd chick is always doomed.
Here is an interesting article about cainism: http://www.raptor-research.de/pdfs/a_rp700p/a_rp705.pdf
And this too: http://www.mil.brandenburg.de/cms/media ... slovak.pdf

Thank you for the links mia. Thank You I only noticed one eaglet in the LSE nests last year. I saw cainism mentioned somewhere but don't remember where. Was reading entries about cainism for the black eagle in Africa and wasn't certain I wanted to see such a thing. It seems a bit pointless to me but it has been this way for eons. Edit: We won't get our wish as the 2nd egg is hatching on June 15, 2013 in the am.

From June 14, 2013

10:06 pm Eha decided to fly off for a few minutes. Baby looked around until Eha returned.

10:08 pm Eha returns and moves a nest over to the 10 o'clock side of the nest and offers baby some food. Baby took some pieces. Probably not too hungry after the earlier feed. Eha kept trying for about 6 minutes or so.

5:25 am Eha got up to feed baby. Baby was a little uncoordinated but was peeping and definitely going for the food. He was able to get some nice chunks.
