Dad is too funny He is a star - probably a super star. When I was watching earlier Mom was standing on the back right corner and Dad was standing center front rim. The egg in mid nest. I shouldn't say Dad was standing - fidgeting is a better word. Finally he made his decision on what to do - leave the egg to Mom and mate with her instead. Which he did and then flew off.

It must be quite warm in center nest today as they are really letting the egg stay in the open air a lot to slow it's incubation start.,

A few minutes ago Dad returned and snuggled right down next to Mom again. That's the third time I have noted that behavior today.

I am watching Hellgate and Calgary at the same time. My suppostion about nest temp must be correct. The Hellgate dad, Stanley, has been doing the exact same fidgety dance that our Dad was doing earlier. It's been going on for about 10 minutes now (Iris is off eating a fish he brought in) He is at least a second year Dad.

In less than half a minute Mom arrived followed by Dad. He stopped long enough to mate and flew off again.

10 30am MDT

Morning All!

Thank you for the good wishes Judy

I have been watching for awhile this morning. All going routinely. Noted that both O's are doing a lot of "airing" the egg rather than covering and keeping it what ever temperature they do to incubate. That's a convoluted sentence. Meaning keeping it cool to delay it's development to be closer in hatch time to the eggs laid later.

Dad was standing over the egg when Mom came flying in from the sandbar area

Both went on defense and sure enough - an intruder appeared but quickly veered off.
You have to look very closely to see him at the top of the image - just the head and one wing show.

Dad issued a challenge

and then flew off to enforce it Mom lay down over the egg so it is now safe and keeping warm

Dad took over egg sitting - this time on the egg.

Just a note regarding Hellgate nest for those who are interested. Iris latest egg is broken. Now there will definitely not be a cuckoo in the nest.
