soph9 what do you mean by you dont think that this this tree is not the right one for an eagles nest ? There is nothing wrong with the tree for a nest the eagles know better than humans about nesting they are comfortable with the the one they buildt before the darn racoons moved into there nest do you have any idea that its mating time for the eagles. this is not about having a mansion on a good looking wonderful tree this is about the lives of eagles and there offsprings

tig if you can ever go to the site you will see this nest is not really ideal....the nest is low to the ground, eagles usually like their nests higher up and the pair are not really utilizing the branches to hold up their nesting material all that well. I personally think they are young but are getting better at rebuilding. Also, this nest is really close to many buildings. I am not saying this nest can not be used again...I am saying it is just not ideal.

Well, if they are forced to pick this nest or the 2nd one they are trying to build I think they won't have much choice but to go with this one. We have to keep in mind that with the Sidney and Hornby nests we are watching pairs that have had many years of experience in selecting appropriate trees and building nests. Even so, the new nest tree the Sidney's are using is not considered 'the best' by human standards.

We can only wait and hope to see them return to this nest when the time is right. Remember, the Delta 1 pair literally turned up and laid eggs last year with no nest preparations at all. It was hardly ideal but they raised 1 chick succesfully. This nest is far better than the Delta1 nest ever was.

As for the Racoon situation... we don't know how common this might be but it is sure interesting and you just never know what will come of it. I think documenting this is as important as any other activity we see at our eagles' nests.

2:51PM w/a windy and wet at the nest; no sight or sound of activity

3:02PM w/a trills heard. ( my volume was way down so I'm not sure how close)

4:05PM w/a wind is getting a bit stronger. no activity on the nest.

5:43PM w/a -- I have heard a few calls in the last 90 or so minutes but of course with so many eagles in the area it's impossible to know if it was out pair.

It is still nice and light at the nest...

5:58PM OUT...
