Hi Everyone,

I've been enjoying learning about the Ospreys from your forum, and am so appreciative to all of you for your superb efforts in documenting the day to day activities of this Calgary Osprey family - from arrival to departure. Thank you!

Janet, your ground photos from today are both precious and priceless! I love the one of Mom's 'bath'. I believe I have a s'cap from the webcam that matches your timeframe. I saw a large, dark bird down on the sandbar and thought it might be an O, so I took a s'cap.

4:15pm - The chick at 12 is looking over there.

4:19pm - You can see the splashing as well.

As a side note: I have not seen chick 3 at nest all afternoon or evening - I was watching the cam fairly closely. Hopefully, all three chicks will be on the nest in the morning.

Can't imagine why I am not sleepy - couldn't possibly have anything to do with my long afternoon nap.

One of the items swirling in my wide awake mind was someone mentioned not being aware of the nest box being stripped down each year. Unless you have been obsessed with these Calgary Osprey for a number of years, you would not have known.

The Canadas arrive before the Osprey. If you were faced with the option of your big wide flat feet having to have contact with this environment what would be your choice? A nice ready made nest 40 /50 feet above this frozen landscape, or trying to grind out a shallow bowl in the earth under a leafless scrub shrub?

(image was April 12, 2011 - O's arrived about the15th)

A representative from the Zoo and the EnMax bucket truck go to the nest and strip it. The geese can not carry sticks and moss with their beaks or feet to cover the screen mesh floor - so they can only use the box as a resting place to keep their feet from freezing

Another item on which enquiring minds might like some insight - the migration.

None of the Calgary O's have ever had tracking gear installed. I searched and searched for migration routes on any O's on the Western side of the continent. I did find a couple of maps from near by areas that will at least give you an idea of their destinations - Astounds me that they fly so far for their winter habitats.

6:28 am
One arrives.
An O flew by the nest a second after this one landed.

6:29 am
Second one arrives.
No sign of the third one unless he was the one that flew by when the first one landed.

6:45 am
No sign of the third chick.

Looking back over the years it's not unusual for one or two chicks to stop coming to the nest this time of year.

Possible that O are at the edge of the sandbar where Mom was splashing yesterday. I saw some black spots and the 2 Chicks on nest do appear to be looking in that direction. Hope #3 appears soon.
