another adult home = 5 birds on the nest a confusion of wings and a take off

now only the chicks on the nest
I see a 2nd fish now. chick at 11 and chick at 1 both have fish
3rd chick is at 7oclock corner and just stayed out of the way while at the drama was happening (such a clever bird!)

I missed the other adult coming. I bet it was mom with the other fish and when she came the male took off. Thanks terrytvgal!

Glad you're here, Christine. I just got home and logged in, to see three chicks and and adult, with one chick mantling a big fish - so I thought everything was fairly normal.



Then a second adult landed....



And I'm not quite sure what happened next - I think the smaller adult took off, then the larger one - but am not sure. Would love to see the instant replay on this! (And I do know how much work goes into reviewing the videos to see what happened and post a summary.) All three chicks were in defend-the-nest mode after the adults left.



At this point the one in the upper right is mantling and appears to be eating, the one in the upper left is flapping and appears to be trying to get a grip on a piece of fish, and the one in the lower right may also have something. Off to read back and see how many fish are on the nest.

Added - glad you were also watching, Terry - interesting times!

It looks as if everyone is eating, and the two fish I can see look quite large. Mom (and friend?) have been busy today.

4:06pm clearly everyone is eating -- the chick at 7 must have been laying low to keep his fish out of the action. (again I say, clever bird !! )

I would love to know if the friend brought in the fish that the 'let at 1:00 pm has.

I admit that when I saw Mom land on the nest with the male there and not go after him, I was wondering if it might be Dad. I am sorry to learn that it's not - but very glad that you could tell, Christine, so we wouldn't be wondering. I do suspect that the young male may be courting Mom - but he was on the nest when I first looked, so I don't know if he brought a fish. It looked to me as if there were three fish in the nest in the pictures with Mom perched on the edge, which makes me think he might have brought one if there were only two before. But it all happened too fast.

Chicks are defending the nest, though I haven't seen what they are concerned about.




I also thought I saw something else in the area when the two adults left the nest - so it's also possible that they both went after another intruder. I do hope BET has tape running.

Third chick has also had its wings spread some of the time - just haven't caught a picture of all three doing it at once.
