Chicks alarmed at adult on post

Chick flares wings at adult and adult is also flaring wings - is the chick flaring at the adult and the adult responding - or are they both flaring at an unseen intruder

Well, BET, I thought I saw at least three passes overhead by an adult and felt there was an intruder and Mom came in chasing and I too thought that the intruder landed nearby and your scap does look like the adult is turned and facing towards the intruder perhaps. Hard to know when we cannot see behind the scenes but I do know the lets were very upset.

Thanks for the scaps. As Terri said all is calm now. I was AFK too for awhile.

7:10 Still some of the last fish left, all should sleep well tonight. Wonder if they will fly about and sleep off the nest again or stay and guard the nest.

Regarding the adult alarm

In my opinion - The first two passes are another adult Osprey, interested in the big brown trout #3 is slowly working on. This is just a gut feeling - enhanced by the chicks attitudes and the rather dark head markings of Inbound/overpassing O The light is not great as the head is shadowed but it seems to me the markings are heavier -

I think the O landing on the post is Mom. The intruder could be on the bar above cam or in a near by tree - or flying circles just off cam view.

That's my guess - for what it's worth

Well, thanks for checking, BET. It has been relatively quiet since then and now that the chick at 10 flew off his fish is getting cleaned up by our first eater so there will not likely be food left on the nest tonight. One chick has been gone for close to 20 min. now at 7:50 pm. Feather did a quick flyabout and was back in a min.

Have a good evening. Smile

8:05pm.......Mom has certainly done a great job again today of feeding her chicks! It will be interesting to see if they spend the night on the nest or stay away like last night. One chick is gone and maybe won't be back tonight. 2 are left on the nest......one still eating at the 10/11 position. The other seems content to just be there. I hope Mom can keep up this routine and stay strong herself. I read on another site today that osprey chicks take a really long time to learn to hunt so I think Mom has a big job yet. Maybe she can get some help from another male osprey in the area.
