would be nice if this was fluff instead of snow......but they seem to be covering it with sticks and tracks.

They sure do like to be together this morning.

The snow does show that there are lots of little sticks, which may break down to make a softer nest than I was envisioning - it's easy to see them moving the big sticks, but harder to tell if they're moving smaller sticks around.

I also like how they're sitting side by side on the perch in the background when they're not at the nest. I realize that a lot of this is instinct - but I like to think there's a bit of love there as well. Smile

(off topic - am I the only one who finds it a bit strange that there seems to be more snow in North Carolina than in Maine, Colorado or BC?)

It is icy there this morning ....nippy for sure....when we see ice on the cam.

Derek and Savannah are having a morning conversation at the nest. Do you suppose she will lay egg/s in the area she dug out yesterday? That is where the snow has been pushed away.

(Those two storms that have hit the east coast and midwest really brought them winter. We, in Colo finally got 10 inches and COLD, too. And this last storm is bringing snow to NYC and Boston.....and parts of Maine. But it has been very unusual weather for sure. The Colo mts have more snow right now that they usually have by March. Down along the front range and into the prairies it has been dry since SEpt. Did not know that Maine was less snowy.)

Savannah seems to have answered my question about the clearing in the nest.

Hard to be sure the way they move around between refreshes, but I think they both just tried out the nest area:

I don't know how near Savannah is to egg-laying - but seeing them work on the nest cup and watching them wiggle down into it several times today makes me think it's getting close. I do remember that they did insulate the nest box, so they should be able to keep eggs warm if they do lay the first one before the snow melts - and it does look as if they've gotten a nice little nest cup prepared.

I hadn't noticed the icicles, Mary - thanks for mentioning them! That is sort of neat.

Both are hanging around this morning - and it looks sunny, so hopefully the snow will be melting.
