Pot Plant Owl

Some fantastic suggestions for a name for Pappa's new mate...thank you all! I look at her from my bedroom window and she looks quite regal so Lady might be a good name. I can't call her Mamma because I called PPO that in private. But Lady...has a nice ring to it....

Sounds good to me! I was one who suggested that! Very Happy

Sounds good to me as well, Mary - and I am surprised that several groups of viewers have independently decided to name a new female Lady. love Our Lady Lafarge comes to mind, of course, but I've recently see a third nest use that as well, though I'm not remembering where.

Pot Plant Owl

Pappa spent the day roosting in the palm tree by our gate. A couple of seconds after I took last night's picture of the two eggs, Pappa flew onto the balcony to have a look. He seemed most impressed...hooting for ages as he looked into the pot plant.
In answer to some questions about why there is a new Lady in the old nest site...Pappa holds the territory so he will try convince a new mate to use the trusted breeding site he knows.
We highly doubt the new Lady could be an offspring because when the owlets fledge, they will get 'gently shoved' out of the territory soon afterwards to find their own territories and mates. We believe they will all be far away now, given our urban location and lack of green space.

Pot Plant Owl shared Allan Eccles's post.

Lying in the bath looking out at Pappa listening to his call. This is our house in Johannesburg. Very special

Pot Plant Owl

Pappa has been visiting the balcony and proudly watching over his family. Sorry about the neighbours voice in the background.

Pot Plant Owl

September 15

Thanks to the influx of rats to our complex (courtesy of our neighbour's unauthorised aviary), we have a rat in our ceiling.

This unwanted visitor arrived before the owls this time. We've been trying to remind the rat of who occupies our balcony...to no avail. This rat and mate refuse to move.

In the early hours of this morning, we were woken to what sounded like a wildebeest stampede in our ceiling. We shone a torch up in there and rat took off outside.

It's only a matter of time until rats and a hungry family of owls come face to face.

Ratty...if you choose to remain here, your days are numbered....
