Sadly the egg at Sauces broke ... hope for a second egg tomorrow or
the nest day.

The Sauces birds laid and lost another egg today. Looking at the history of the nest, it has failed in 5 of the 9 previous nesting attempts, with 2 different males and 3 different females. Male A-28 was present 2008-2011, and the male A-40 from 2012 to present. Female A-02 was present in 2008-2009 and failed both years. Female A-27 was present from 2010 until she was displaced by A-48 in 2013. A-27 was successful every year except 2013, when ravens took the eggs. Female A-48 was unsuccessful in 2014 and 2015, and had two chicks last year. Why the eggs are breaking so quickly with the current pair is hard to say. Unfortunately, we can't get information on potential contaminates from eggshells; only from egg contents.

Sauces, Santa Cruz: by Janntonne > SC - Heartbreak for A-40 & A-48

Less than 2 hours after laying her 2nd egg, A-48 rises, picks at the egg and paces around the nest. She appears to be eating the contents of a broken egg. She settles back down on it, rising again when her mate, A-40 brings fluff to the nest. After she flies away, A-40 goes to the egg and moves the broken egg shell. He appears as heartbroken as we are. He'll get over it far sooner than we will.

Ferenz thanks for sharing and reporting on our Sauces pair ... so very sad for them.

With all the rotten luck at this nest i have wondered from some time if there is chemical contamination in their environment causing
the egg shells to be weak and non viable.

Hope this pair is blessed with a third egg that is viable!

Here are links to the Sauces egg laying ... and then the loss.

Thanks Jann for the videos

825 am
Wet morning at the nest; all the nests are MT right now.
The Sauces pair visited their nest this morning and a bonding
was heard too.

Talons crossed for a third viable egg for this pair.

Two Harbors Update

Dr. Sharpe reported an adult at the TH nest this morning; it is K82 woo hoo!
This pair has not been visiting the nest so perhaps we have some hope for this
nest yet!
