Fraser Point Family History

Meet the resident pair Wub

Resident Female - A49 - Cruz - Current Age 9

In 2006 Cruz was the first natural hatch (Pelican Harbor nest) in the Channel Islands since 1949.

Resident Male - A64 - Spirit - Current Age 7

K26 and K10 were also the parents of Spirit ... class of 2008.

Cruz and Spirit's - History Together

2012 - One chick; died unknown causes
2013 - One chick; A89 F - Sapphire - first second generation eagle successfully fledged
2014 - Two chicks; A97 M - Maxiwo; A98 F - Glory - both fledged
2015 - Two chicks - A54 F Chanita; Second chick F - Takoda too small for wing blings; banded #709-03074
2016 - Nest failed; a golden eagle was threatening the resident pair; the golden eagle visited the nest several times during the 2016 nesting season. Cruz stood her ground saw her at the nest protecting her territory but after a while we saw less and less of the resident male so not sure if he is still in the area or not.

Morning Channel Islands Friends wave

Welcome to the 2016 Channel Islands Nesting Season Welcome

Here is a summary of the 2015 Nesting Season

Summary of the 2015 Nesting Season

Pelican Harbor
We do not know if the elusive Pelican Harbor pair nested in 2015 as they did not use the nest where the cam was situated.
The cam equipment at the PH nest is going to be moved to the Fraser Point nest for the 2016 season.

A-49 Princess Cruz who hatched on the Pelican Harbor nest in 2006 is now paired with A-64 and they call the Fraser Point nest their home.
So although we will miss watching K26 and K10 it will be bittersweet to be able to watch K26's and K10 chick raise her own babies ...
a true testament to the success of the recovery of the bald eagles to the Channel Islands.

Sauces
Egg(s) laid; Nest Failed

Two Harbors
Two chicks; One chick fell thorough the nest at age 3+ Weeks; second chick was banded - May 27 2015 - K58 (F) official name EmeraldSkye.
K58 fledged on July 4 and was still visiting the nest at the end of August.

West End
One chick died just days before hatching; the body was visible when parent removed it from nest.
The second chick died (53 days of age) in Dr. Sharpe's arms on what was to be banding day;
necropsy performed by the Wildlife Investigations Laboratory of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, determined the West End chick
died from an acute bacterial infection in the blood (septicemia).

All of the Channel Islands are off line right now except for the Sauces nest ... bringing this post from Dr. Sharpe forward as information.

"Unfortunately, the Catalina cams will be down for the foreseeable future. A wind storm lifted the tower holding the solar panels and batteries for the internet link to the mainland and flipped it off the hill (fortunately, I hadn't put the $1300 worth of antennas back on yet). Two of the six solar panels were shattered, so I'll need to replace those, move the tower to a new location that isn't as exposed to the Santa Ana winds, rewire the batteries and other components, realign the antenna on the mainland, and realign the antennas from the nest cams. November is already busy with meetings and working on other camera systems, so the Catalina cameras should be back on by the end of December."
