Mom was just up turning the eggs - wow!

And here are two s'caps to show how much the nest tree is rocking - though some of the movement may also be in the tree where the cam is located.

I also recorded a 1-minute video, which I'll try to add later today.

The sustained wind speed is 20-30 miles per hour, with gusts up to 60 miles per hour - definitely nasty weather for people and critters.

Happy Easter!

Today is Day 35 for the first egg; last year the first egg hatched on day 35 or 36, so we are on hatch watch.

I apologize for not posting here the last 3 weeks - it's been a busy time at work, and a busy time for a lot of other nests, and happily all has been quite peaceful here. love

There are lots of pictures and reports on the Maine forum - today's posts start here - http://www.window-on-wildlife.com/index ... 0#msg82700

And here are two pictures from today:

I haven't really noticed the adults paying a lot of attention to the eggs, so it's possible that hatching is still a couple of days away. But I am very curious about what the morning will bring. Smile

April 21-22 Summary

Posted April 23, 1 pm

It looked as if there was a hatch underway on April 21. The adults were looking down into the nest bowl frequently - and Mom even approached with a bit of food at one point, and then appeared to decide it was too soon. We were all hoping - and I think expecting - to see a little bobblehead when it got light on April 22.

2 minute video from 4:50 pm, April 21:

Video Camera Something Interesting?

That didn't happen. There are a couple of videos where there was movement that might have been a chick - or not. But there was no attempt at feeding, and the adults didn't seem all that interested in what was in the nest bowl. By late morning many of us suspected that the first chick either did not survive the hatching process, or may have been too weak after the incredibly hard work of hatching to survive for long.

The adults were incubating, we thought we saw an egg being rolled - but there wasn't the interest they'd been showing the previous day. We kept hoping to see a chick, and some people thought they could hear an occasional peep - but there never was anything conclusive. Then in the afternoon, there was a series of fly-bys by an intruder.

4 minute video from 6:42 pm - warning - video starts with the adults screaming, so might be loud if your speakers are up

Video Camera Intruder!

Happily things improved on the 23rd. love

We have a chick!

6:52 am

First reported sighting was 6:04 am. Little one looks very strong as it waits for breakfast.

It looked as if the adult tried to find something appropriate for a tiny chick in the nestovers and didn't succeed - so hoping Dad shows up soon with breakfish!

Speaking of which, my own breakfast calls!
