And now the western painted turtles have appeared
From their winter hibernation
At the bottom of the lake.

A walk to Elizabeth Lake,
Then using our senses
To be more aware
Of the natural world around us.

A return to the St. Eugene Golf Resort
To check out the differences
Since the Outdoor Club's last visit in late January.

High in a heron nest!

Shortly afterwards
We watched a pileated woodpecker
Scale a tree
In search of bugs.

Then we followed
A great blue heron
Fly upriver.

Amazingly we spotted
Not one or two or three
Western painted turtles
But seven,
Either sunning themselves
On logs in a pond,
Or swimming nearby.
As we stood quietly,
We were able to observe them
For several minutes
Till it was time to go.

Some of us also spotted
Two squirrels chasing each other.
Then a Columbia ground squirrel appeared,
Then it disappeared down its warren.

As we walked back
A muskrat swam across a pond,
Then crawled on the bank
And began feeding on the lush grass.

But one of the best surprises
Was waiting for us at the lookout,
A bald eagle circling
Above our heads!
