A sunny afternoon at Elizabeth Lake
Seems more springlike
With prairie crocuses to welcome us.
We also see mullein, cattails, algae,
Witch's hair and Old Man's beard,
Ponderosa Pine and Douglas Fir,
Trembling Aspen and Willow,
Blackthorn and Wild Rose.

We spot coots, Canada geese
And red-winged blackbirds,
As we explore the shoreline.
We stop to watch the ground squirrels.
Then we hear the killdeer call,
But they are hard to spot.
There are also signs of deer and woodpeckers.

On our way back to school
We stop to check out the storm drain
Which carries an important message
Reminding us NOT TO POLLUTE!

A walk to Cranbrook Public Library
To hear author, Ann Alma,
Talk her latest book,
Kids Who Grow Their Own Food.
Getting started is as easy as
Taking an empty egg shell,
Making a hole in the bottom,
Then adding some potting soil,
Planting the seed,
And watering gently.
Then wait and watch!

Peas appear to grow fairly quickly.

On our return to school,
We take paper, pencil and clipboard
To the Native Garden area
To reflect on what we learned about gardening.

Today we sorted the garbage from four classes
Into paper towels and Kleenex,
Paper and cardboard,
Untouched and partially eaten food,
Juice containers,
Food wrappers,
And Ziplock bags.
Guess what we discovered???
Untouched and partially eaten food
Was almost five or six times greater
Than everything else combined!!!
