The contents of the yellow bins
Are taken to the Materials Recycling Facility,
Where they're put onto conveyor belts.

Then they are sorted,
Made into bales,
Ready to be shipped
And made into recyclable products.

Crushed glass is also stored there
Before being taken to Alberta,
Where it may be made into
Fibreglass, reflective paint for road marking,
Or sand for sand traps at golf courses.

Our final destination
Was the Regional Landfill.
Where our garbage
Gets buried.
Once it's buried,
That's it.
It doesn't decompose
Because it's starved of oxygen.

But we also saw that clean wood
Can be made into mulch.
It will be taken to the Cogeneration Plant
At Skookumchuck
And turned into power
To help run the plant.

Back in school
We worked with partners,
Trying to think of things to add
To sheets on a variety of topics
That we chose by ourselves
Related to our morning trip.
Our teacher called this way of working
A Carousel.

After we visited each centre
And had a chance to add our ideas,
We looked at our own sheet,
To see what others had added.
Then we displayed all our work
On the whiteboards.
We were amazed
At all our ideas.

Torrin's Uncle Wilfred from Saskatoon
Read one of his stories,
Call of the Fiddle,
About a young Metis boy
Who carries on his family's traditions
And learns how to do Metis jigging.

We learned the different steps
For the Red River Jig.

It was great fun
Jigging to the music!

During our Thursday walk
We saw several birds,
Including the remains
Of a Canada goose.

I'd hoped we might spot
A bald eagle,
But the fog was too thick
To be able to see any distance.

Yesterday I took a walk to the lake
And caught sight of an eagle
Circling and diving
Above the lake
Near the highway.
As I watched,
I realized there were not one but two.

I set off,
Wondering if they'd still be there
By the time I reached that spot.

I had just managed to take this picture
Before both flew off
In the direction
I'd just come from.
Although disappointed,
I wasn't surprised
Because this has happened previously
On two or three occasions.
It seems that these eagles
Have a sixth sense,
That warns them
I'm hunting them
With my camera!

On my way back home
I stopped to check...
Sitting on its favourite perch
Was one of the eagles.
I have a funny feeling
That it was laughing at me!
But just wait till next time!!

On Thursday some of us spotted a muskrat,
A dark shape moving away from the shore,
Making a V-wave with its body.

While watching some coots yesterday
At a different part of the lake,
I saw another muskrat
Approaching the birds.
Then it dived.
I waited, wondering where it might appear.
Suddenly a coot shot into the air,
Startled by the sight of the muskrat
As it surfaced nearby.
Then the muskrat made for the cattails,
Where it came out of the water
And began feeding.

Several times during the afternoon
Canada geese passed overhead
Just after take off,
Or as they prepared to land.
I wonder what I'll see next time?

Guess what was spotted
Circling high in the sky
Over our school
After most children
Had left for home?

A bird
With a wide wingspan,
White tail
And white head.

Now what could that be???
