Hancock here;

Duane Starr captures Festival Bald Eagle Release

The Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival each year tries to gain some pre-festival publicity by having OWL, our associated raptor rehab organization, release some eagles. These have often been eagles captured hurt and rehabilitated or chicks that earlier fell out of nests and are now ready for release. Of course what better place for release than on the Harrison where there are tons of salmon carcasses in the waiting and a lot of other eagles around to "give advice"!!

This year the release had a twist. One eagle flew off as hoped, hung around soaring as though it had been doing this all its life. The other eaglet flew less vigorously and after a half mile flight flopped down into the river in response to being attacked by a gull. The eagle swam ashore, in part corralled by the OWL team in a local resident's canoe and then, after sitting drying out, flew off.

Part of the above sequence was very capably captured by Duane Starr who here offers our group a view of his incredible images. Duane has the attached swimming series of photos and is proposing putting together another series on the two released eaglets in followup shots. Enjoy and thanks, Duane.

Note from Duane Starr

Hi folks:

Here are the photos I took of the juvenile eagle when it was forced into the water after being released....until it was helped ashore. The album contains 171 images.

Just follow these simple steps to view the album:

To see the album "click" on the large picture below....that will take you to the album...once there "click" on the large picture you see in the album and that will show the picture in the large format....you can scroll left or right using the arrows on the sides....

What a marvellous series of photos of the eaglet's plight. Thank you for sharing Sharon, David and Duane. It looks to me as if the poor bird was trying to fly out of the water rather than conserve energy and simply swim. Thankfully the canoe was there to assist its progress to shore. You can see the momentum rise as the bird started swimming, then wane as it must have tired. That must have been one depleted eaglet once on shore!
Well done Duane!

Thanks Sharon for posting David's message and thanks to Duane Starr for all the pictures!

I have seen a video showing the eaglet swimming and flapping to shore. Smile
I'm glad we had a happy ending.
