First known panda triplets born in China

Pantastic!

A zoo in China has welcomed what is believed to be the world’s first known set of panda triplets.

Juxiao, the mama panda, delivered the rare trio at Guangzhou’s Chimelong Safari Park last month, but was unable to care for them at first due to exhaustion, the Guardian reports.

The zoo announced Tuesday that she has now regained her strength after the four-hour delivery and has been reunited with her newborn triplets.

“It was a miracle for us and [the births] exceeded our expectations,” zoo general manager Dong Guixin said.

“It’s been 15 days. They have lived longer than any other triplets so far.”

The adorable baby pandas have not yet been named and their genders will not be determined until they are older.

Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China-The world's only known surviving set of panda triplets, born in captivity, are celebrating their one month birthday.
The rare pandas were born on July 29th to giant Panda Juxiao.
Chimelong Safari Park Zoo in South China released video that shows the triplets at their one month checkup. You can see veterinarians measuring and examining the cubs. Zoo officials say the animals are in good health.
The oldest of the three is female and the other two are male.
The zoo is organizing a worldwide naming campaign for the baby pandas, and the winner will take home nearly $18,000.
Giant pandas are native to the mountains and deep bamboo forests of southwestern China and are notoriously difficult to breed.
49 pandas were born in China last year, but only 42 survived. Worldwide, 370 pandas have been bred in captivity, while an estimated 1,600 remain in the wild.

'Miracle' panda triplets open their eyes in Chinese zoo
..................."The panda triplets have all opened their eyes and are in good, healthy condition," Guangzhou's Chimelong Safari Park said in a statement Thursday.
The second panda to be born was the first to open their eyes, followed by the lastborn and then the firstborn.
The cubs, the size of a small dog, weighed from 2,678 to 2,886 grams (5.9 to 6.3 pounds), the statement said.
"Each one is starting to show its own individuality. For example, the third one is the most lively," it said, adding that the cubs are now living in wooden boxes.
The cubs' next stage in development will be to start walking, the statement continued.
The zoo also has said that a naming competition is already underway and will end in mid-October.
The gender of the cubs cannot be determined until they grow older.
The mother panda, named Juxiao, meaning "chrysanthemum smile", delivered the triplets at Guangzhou's Chimelong Safari Park in the early hours of July 29.

World's oldest giant panda in captivity dies in Hong Kong
http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/wor ... id=ieslice

The world's oldest ever giant panda in captivity died on Sunday aged 38 at a Hong Kong theme park, officials said.
Jia Jia was put down after her health rapidly deteriorated over the last two weeks leaving her unable to walk without difficulty, a statement from the Ocean Park Hong Kong theme park said.
Born in the wild in China's Sichuan province in 1978, Jia Jia was given to Hong Kong in 1999 to mark the semi-autonomous city's handover by Britain two years earlier.
But as her health declined over recent days, her food consumption slumped from more than 10 kilogrammes (22 pounds) a day to less than three and her weight also declined.
"Her state became so debilitated that based on ethical reasons and in order to prevent suffering, veterinarians from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department and Ocean Park agreed to a humane euthanasia for Jia Jia," the theme park said.
"This is a day we knew would eventually come, but it is nevertheless a sad day for everyone at the Park, especially for the Park's keepers who took care of her over the years," Ocean
Park chairman Leo Kung added.
In July 2015 the giant panda was presented with a towering birthday cake made from ice and fruit juice with the number 37 carved on top in her enclosure.
Jia Jia, whose name translates as "excellence", picked at fruit slices and bamboo around the ice cake to celebrate her big day as a record-breaking bear -- becoming the oldest panda panda ever living in captivity.
There are fewer than 2,000 pandas now left in the wild, according to the World Wildlife Fund, as their habitats have been ravaged by development.
Given their low birthrate, captive breeding programmes have become key to ensuring their survival.
According to Ocean Park, Jia Jia gave birth five times to six panda cubs.

A pair of giant pandas are back in their natural habitat after receiving two years worth of survival training at China's Wolong Giant Panda Protection and Research Center.
Male Ba Xi and female Ying Xue were sent out into the Liziping Nature Reserve in Ya'an, Sichuan Province on Thursday. They are the eighth and ninth pandas to be released back into the wild since 2005, the Daily Mail reported.
The animals, who are both 2 years old, were taught to forage and protect themselves in the wild thanks to animal experts "dressed in black and white panda costumes scented with the animals' urine," Express reported.
The giant panda was downgraded from "endangered" to "vulnerable" nearly a year ago, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Since 2014, the giant panda population has risen by 17 percent.
Today there are more than 1,800 giant pandas in China, the IUCN reported.
