Mom and Dad were swimming around the raft when the wee one climbed up and waddled her way to the nest bowl

Mom climbed up at the normal spot with a small minnow for the chick.

The chick wasn't hungry and ignored it. Mom swallowed it. The chick was all over her, around and under her wings etc. Finally she made it up onto Mom's back. Dad arrived at this time with a minnow. He moved up and offered it to the chick.

The chick turned it down and slid off Mom's back. Dad left. Mom settled comfortably. I think the chick was under her far wing. Suddenly Mom took off - the chick had decided to go swimming and Mom was off to protect her. They have been back around the raft. May or may not spend the night.

THis is so strange - delightfully so. Usually the day after the second chick hatches the loons do not return to the nest. They are long gone cruising their lakes. For some reason, this baby loon likes the nest. Prefers to be on it when she is tired of swimming rather than riding around on a parents back. She leads the way to the nest, waddles up and shelters in the shade of the Iris while a parent swims guard just off the side of the raft. According to Larry's blog, yesterday morning, she was alone on the nest for about an hour and the parents were out of sight across the lake. Strange - but a pure delight to be able to watch this cute little black fluff ball waddle around, fall over on her side, upside down - I noticed that she even has fallen to her side while swimming. Graceful - she is not!!!!Grin

Here she and Mom are settled down in the nest for this evening.

Dad has just arrived with fish in beak to offer her.

He climbed up on the platform and offered it to her. She took it and then dropped it turned to huddle next to Mom. Dad rescued it and swam off with it - back and forth by the preferred entrance to the platform, around the raft and back.
Miss Princess making no attempt to take the offering.

On Easter the snow stops falling and the weather warms up. This tiny Loon peeks out from mother's warm feathers and goes for a short swim. After a few minutes he returns.
