The Southern Carmine Bee-eater is a bird about the same size as a starling. The height of the Southern Carmine Bee-eater is about 27 cms and its weight is about 62 gms. Male and female have the same plumage and colours. The head is green and the bill is black. The other distinguishing marks are the pink throat and the red back. It's legs are grey and the eye bown.

The Dwarf Bittern has a height of 25 cms and weighs around 140 gms. The head is coloured grey, black while the bill is coloured grey. The Ixobrychus sturmii has a grey coloured throat, yellow legs and a grey, black coloured back. The eyes are yellow.(1) Can be confused with a juvenile Green-backed Heron.

"The Brubru has a height of 15 cms and weighs around 24 gms. The head is coloured black while the bill is coloured black. The Nilaus afer has a white coloured throat, grey legs and a black coloured back. The eyes are brown."(1) It has rufous flanks. "It is a small bush-shrike placed in its own genus."(2)

"The African Red-eyed Bulbul has a height of 21 cms and weighs around 31 gms. The head is coloured black while the bill is coloured black. The Pycnonotus nigricans has a black coloured throat, black legs and a brown coloured back." (1) It has a red eye-ring.

The Kurrichane Buttonquail has a height of 16 cms and weighs around 50 gms. The head is coloured brown while the bill is coloured blue, grey. The Turnix sylvaticus has a white coloured throat, pink legs and a brown coloured back. The eyes are cream.(1)
