Here is a picture showing both bands indicating it is the female. I thought so from the size.

I heard back from Andy Stewart, ostrich. This female was born and banded in 2005 at a nest in Broadmead, a suburb of Victoria. She nested for the first time in 2006 at a nest in Central Park in town. She is 8 years old! Since she has now mated with the male in my neighbourhood Andy presumes her former mate at Central Park is also deceased. Andy says he is no longer studying Cooper's Hawks and that is why my neighbourhood hawklets are not banded. But he is still interested in knowing how they are doing.
He sent me a picture of this new female with her first mate in 2006. I neglected to ask him if I could post it. I will ask him and post it if he gives me permission. It is wonderful to be able to get such a detailed history of the life of these birds.

Andy has given me permission to share this photo taken in 2006 of Red M over M with her Central Park mate.
Ian: You will note the eye colour differentiation.

That is great - I assume the female is that juvenile when she was banded? (A breeding juvenile male would be unusual). Since she is still juvenile she would have the yellow eye coloration. I'm kind of sad to hear Andy is no longer collecting banding data on them but hopefully he's gotten a lot of good stuff out of the data.

Yes our current female is the juvie on the right in Andy's picture when she was banded in 2005.
A couple of days ago there were still at least 2 of this year's hawklets hanging around together near the nest area.

I have been calling the baby hawks " hawklets" for lack of a more educated term. I now know they are called
" eyas" and a male hawk is called a " tierce" and a female a " hen". It is good to be informed.

The Coopers hawk nest cam at the Saskatchewan Science Centre is back up - there are 5 or 6 eggs
